We depart the city along the Atlantic seaboard passing famous coastal suburbs to Hout Bay where we make our first stop at the World of Birds. This is one of Africa's largest bird parks, home to some 3 000 bird and small animal species. The aviaries are set in a tropical garden over 4 hectares of land, framed by the back of Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles, Chapman's Peak and Little Lion's Head. Stroll through the Monkey Jungle and make friends with inquisitive little squirrel monkeys.

We then drive along the spectacular Chapman's Peak Drive to Noordhoek Farm Village. Set in a growth of oaks, the village has farm animals roaming the gardens. Our lunch stop is at the Food Barn, a great place to enjoy good food inspired by the sensual cooking skills of Franck Dangereux in a relaxed and beautiful setting.

Our final port of call is a little further along the peninsula to Kommetjie where we meet the lighthouse keeper at Slangkop (snake head) Lighthouse. We learn all about the lighthouse: its height is 41 metres above sea level, and it has a range of 33 sea miles.

Return to the city in the late afternoon.
